Microsoft Wireless Keyboard Stops Typing On Mac

Your keyboard and mouse work by sending wireless signals to a USB receiver that came with your setup. This might be a small hub that plugs into a USB port with a wire, a small dongle similar in size and shape to a thumb drive, or a very tiny unit that is barely visible once you slide it into a USB port. This simple, modern desktop provides AES security to protect your keystrokes and has a full-size mouse that provides comfortable, precise navigation.

Your device isn't recognized by your Mac

Follow these steps if your mouse, keyboard, or trackpad isn't recognized by your Mac.

Make sure that your wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad is turned on

The Magic Mouse and Magic Mouse 2 have a slide switch on the bottom of the device. Slide the switch to turn on the device. On the Magic Mouse, the green LED briefly lights up. On the Magic Mouse 2, green coloring is visible beneath the switch.

The Magic Keyboard, Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, and Magic Trackpad 2 have a slide switch on the back edge of the device. Slide the switch to turn on the device (green coloring becomes visible). Earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard models have a power button on the right side of the device. Press the button and you see a green LED on the top of the device, near the button.

When you turn these devices on, they appear as Connected in the Bluetooth section of System Preferences and in the Bluetooth menu in your menu bar. If a device doesn't appear there, make sure it's charged or replace it batteries, and make sure it's been paired with your Mac.

  2. Click the Keyboard Preferences button.
  3. Click on the Input Sources tab.
  4. Make sure that the keyboard language that you use is listed on the left side. If it's not, click and choose from the languages that appear.
  5. Select the checkbox next to Show Input menu in menu bar.
  6. Click on the Keyboard tab, then select the checkbox next to Show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar.
  7. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu in the menu bar. The Keyboard Viewer showing the keyboard layout appears on your display.
  8. Type the key on the keyboard that doesn’t respond and see if the corresponding key highlights on the Keyboard Viewer. If it does, that key is functioning correctly.

  • In OS X 10.8 or later, choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click on Accessibility, then choose Mouse & Trackpad from the list on the left side. Then deselect the Enable Mouse Keys checkbox.
  • In OS X 10.7.5 or earlier, choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click on Universal Access, then select the Mouse & Trackpad tab. Then select the Off button next to Mouse Keys.

If issues with keys persist, try starting up your Mac in single-user mode to see whether a software issue is causing the problem.

Steps for a wireless keyboard

First, make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your Mac. Then follow these steps on your keyboard:

  1. Make sure that your keyboard is turned on. If you have a Magic Keyboard or Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, slide the power switch on the back of the keyboard to turn it on (green is visible when the keyboard is on). If you have an Apple Wireless Keyboard (late 2015 or earlier), press the power button on the right side of the keyboard. The green LED on the upper right side of the keyboard briefly lights up.
  2. Verify that the keyboard is connected by pressing the Caps Lock key. If the keyboard is connected to your system, the Caps Lock light turns on when you press it.
  3. Read about setting up your Apple wireless devices to make sure that the device is set up correctly.
  4. Make sure that your keyboard has power. Check the battery level in the Bluetooth menu at the top of your screen. If power is low, recharge your Magic Keyboard or Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, or replace the batteries in your Apple Wireless Keyboard.
  5. Check the keys by typing in an app like Notes or TextEdit.

If your keyboard doesn't work over Bluetooth after trying these steps, it might need to be replaced.

Steps for a USB keyboard

First, check your device's USB connection. If the tips on that page don't fix it, try these steps:

Microsoft Keyboard Wireless

  1. Unplug all devices from your computer, including any connected mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner, camera, iPod, external hard drive and hub.
Some devices, like iPod, might require you to perform steps before it's safe to unplug them.
  2. Plug your keyboard and mouse back into your computer firmly and securely. Make sure that the connector is completely in the port. (USB plugs fit into ports one way only and won't plug in if you try to insert them upside-down.)
If you have a Magic Keyboard or Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, also make sure that your Lightning to USB cable is securely connected to the Lightning port on the back edge of the keyboard.
  3. If your keys still don't work, try plugging your keyboard in to the other USB ports. Be sure to try them all. Check to see if the keyboard's Caps Lock light turns on when you press it, and try typing in an app like Notes or TextEdit.
Magic Keyboard and Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad use a Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable you're using is the one that came with the keyboard or is a Lightning to USB cable that you know is in working order. You can try a different Lightning to USB cable to test whether the cable is causing the issue.

Other tips for fixing issues with your USB keyboard:

  • If your keyboard works in one of your USB ports but not all, your computer might need service.
  • If your keyboard doesn't work in any of your computer's USB ports, your keyboard might need to be replaced.
  • If your Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad isn’t charging your iOS device, plug your charging cable directly into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a computer that’s on and not in sleep mode.

If only some keys on your wireless, USB, or built-in keyboard work

If some keys on your keyboard work and others don't, try these steps.

Cannot sign into Lync for Mac when connecting through VPN You cannot sign into Lync for Mac when you are connected through a Cisco or Juniper VPN client. Mar 05, 2020  From LifeHacker: 'The Zoom video conferencing app contains two big security issues for Mac users. Hardware and software requirements for Skype for Business on Mac

Microsoft office communicator iphone

The Skype for Business on Mac client requires Mac OS X El Capitan and higher, and uses at least 100MB of disk space. We support the use of all built-in audio and video devices. External devices must be in the Skype for Business Solutions Catalog.

Note

This list is preliminary and some devices may be qualified for Lync, but not supported on Skype for Business on the Mac.Refer to the System requirements for the minimum hardware required.

Legacy Mac clients

Skype for Business Server 2015 also supports the following legacy clients on computers that are running Mac OS 10.5.8 or latest service pack or release (Intel-based) operating systems (Mac OS 10.9 operating system is not currently supported). For details about supported features, see Desktop client feature comparison for Skype for Business.

  • Microsoft Lync for Mac 2011 (see Lync for Mac 2011 Deployment Guide)

  • Microsoft Communicator for Mac 2011 (see Communicator for Mac 2011 Deployment Guide)

These clients are not supported by Skype for Business Server 2019.

Infrastructure requirements for Skype for Business on Mac

The Skype for Business on Mac client leverages both the Unified Communications Management Platform (UCMP) as well as the Unified Communications Web API (UCWA) that our mobility clients use.

The client has the same requirements as our mobility clients in that you must have an Access Edge Server and Reverse Proxy deployed in a supported configuration.

Authentication

The Skype for Business on Mac client supports Cert-based authentication, Microsoft Modern Authentication, and Multi-Factor Authentication when deployed and enabled.

Note

Due to a current limitation, the user's Exchange credentials must be the same as their Skype for Business credentials.

Certificates

Certificates in use on the Access Edge, Reverse Proxy and Front End servers must not use the SHA-512 hash algorithm.

The HTTP Certificate Revocation List must be defined and accessible by the client. For example, we don't support an LDAP entry in the certificate as your Certificate Revocation List.

DNS

Mobility must be properly deployed for the Skype for Business on the Mac client to function properly. A common failure scenario is to have both of the following DNS entries resolvable on the internal network:

  • lyncdiscoverinternal.<sipdomain>

  • lyncdiscover.<sipdomain>

For more information, refer to: Deploying Mobility in Lync Server 2013, and the Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Mobility Guide.

Using emoji to express emotions, ideas and thoughts are very popular on the iPhone and other mobile devices. A couple of quick taps on the keyboard button and you've got them ready. How do you do that on the Mac?

Originally popularized by texting phone users in Japan, emoji are representations of facial expressions, objects and other ideas that use a combination of keyboard characters. For a while, actual emoji images have been built into the iOS and the Mac to make using them more expressive, fun and interesting.

It isn't immediately obvious how to access them on the Mac, though, so here is a quick tip to help you get there faster.

How to use emoji on Mac

  1. Position the cursor in any text field you'd like to insert an emoji, like posting a tweet for example.
  2. Use the keyboard shortcut Command - Control - Spacebar to access emoji.
  3. Double-click the emoji you'd like to use and it'll be inserted where you left your cursor.

Emoji are divided into several categories: Smileys & People, Animals & Nature, Food & Drink, Activity, Travel & Places, Objects, Symbols, and Flags If you don't want to scroll through all of them, you can use the search field to find emoji you'd like to use. Type in the first few letters of the face, object or action you'd like to use and it will narrow down your options accordingly.

How to add the emoji picker to the Menu bar

If you always want the emoji picker at your fingertips, you can go into your system preferences and add the emoji picker to the Menu bar at the top of your Mac.

  1. Click the Apple symbol in the top left corner of your screen.

Mac Pro Vs Microsoft Surface

Sep 20, 2019  Rest assured, your new Surface will work great with your iPhone and favorite apps including iTunes and iCloud. Switch from Mac to Microsoft Surface Skip to main content. Though the Surface Book 2 and MacBook Pro are both on equal footing when it comes to raw power, Microsoft simply lets you do more with its machine than Apple.

Best 2-in-1 laptop

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

Pinnacle Apple

Apple MacBook Air (2018)

Mac Pro Or Surface Pro

The Surface Pro 6 offers an experience no Mac on the market can. Not only can you use a digital pen on it, it's useable as both a tablet and a laptop, combining the use of both an iPad and a MacBook Air into a single device.

Pros

  • Windows Hello security
  • Digital pen support
  • Solid battery life
  • Gorgeous display
  • Quad-core processors

The MacBook Air is Apple's most affordable notebook, and it's an incredible jump from the previous model. The Retina Display is stunning, it has Apple's Touch ID biometric security, and Thunderbolt 3 support. However, it's underpowered next to the Surface Pro 6.

Pros

  • Retina Display
  • Can install Windows 10
  • Touch ID security
  • USB-C Thunderbolt 3
  • Solid battery life

Cons

  • Quite expensive
  • Single dual-core processor option

Considering that both of these run a different OS, that should be one of the main considerations when choosing a laptop. Apple has finally updated the MacBook Air so it can genuinely compete with the best of the Windows ecosystem, but it's still just a laptop. The Surface Pro 6 is a more versatile device, working as both a tablet and a laptop, with a sprinkling of digital notepad thrown in for good measure.

Microsoft surface laptop 3 vs macbook air

The platform you need or want to use should be one main consideration, and how you want to use your portable computer should be the other.

Apples to oranges (or Windows)

On a hardware level, both of these machines are very good. Laptop design has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, so you can absolutely look to the Windows ecosystem to find a product as visually striking as Apple's always have been.

The MacBook Air is, unsurprisingly, stunning. The same can be said of the Surface Pro 6. But while Apple is using a 7W dual-core Intel Core i5 only in the MacBook Air, Microsoft has stuffed quad-core Intel Core i5 and i7 processors into the Surface Pro 6.

In terms of sheer performance, the Surface Pro 6 has the edge with a better processor and more powerful graphics. However, in reality, Mac OS and Apple's own applications are traditionally well optimized, so day to day general performance will feel very similar.

A couple of the biggest differences are just what you can do with each. The Surface Pro 6 not only has a touch display, but support for inking. Windows Ink is built into the OS and there are a bunch of great apps that make use of it. This is all something you have to get an iPad for from Apple to make use of.

The MacBook Air, by contrast, not only has USB-C, but Thunderbolt 3. Something the Surface Pro 6 notably lacks. That means not only can you use standard accessories, such as docks, displays, and Thunderbolt 3 external SSDs, but you can connect an eGPU with a full desktop graphics card in it. Mac gaming isn't necessarily why you'd want this, but for anyone working with video editing or demanding programs such as CAD, that GPU will be really helpful.

The Surface Pro 6 can expand its connectivity, but you'll need the Surface Dock to do it, and you won't be able to hook up an eGPU at all. Microsoft excel backstage view mac computer. It's also worth pointing out that to use the Surface Pro 6 as a laptop, you'll need to spend the extra $130 for a Type Cover.

Choosing between Mac OS and Windows 10

The biggest difference between these two, of course, is the software. Mac OS and Windows 10 have plenty in common and share a lot of the same third party apps — as well as Microsoft Office — but they're still different.

If you haven't entered Apple's ecosystem yet, and you don't have any reliance on its first-party software, such as Final Cut Pro X, then you might be better off considering the Surface Pro 6. Blue screen. The entry-level model is still a little above the MacBook Air on pure hardware, and it's $400 cheaper (without the Type Cover).

Mac OS is very pleasant to use, incredibly well optimized, and always performs well. It also has great software support from Microsoft, such as with the Office Suite, OneDrive, and Skype, as well as notable third-party support from the likes of Adobe and Google. Many of the same apps can be used on a Mac as on Windows 10, but you're going to pay more for the privilege.

There is, however, one more thing. Thanks to Boot Camp, you can easily install Windows 10 on the MacBook Air. The same cannot be said of doing the reverse. So, with the MacBook Air, you can have both platforms.

The choice is yours

When comparing two top devices such as this that run on different platforms, there's no easy way to say which is best. Some will just prefer Windows 10, just as some will automatically lean towards Mac OS.

The platform should be one of the top factors you consider. The other should be what you intend to do with it. The Surface Pro 6 combines the best of a tablet with the best of a powerful Windows 10 laptop. You can get it at a great price, it has a stunning design and build quality, a gorgeous display, and is one of the most flexible machines on the market.

The MacBook Air, by contrast, has plenty in its favor. It always has a keyboard and trackpad attached, it supports the new USB-C standard, and with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity can transform into a powerful desktop rig with dedicated graphics down a single cable. You can't touch the display or write on it with a pen — for that you'll need an iPad — but you can install Windows 10 if you can't decide and want the best of both worlds.

Both of these will be a great fit for your mobile computing needs, but only you can decide which makes the best fit based on their respective differences. That being said, the Surface Pro 6 is just an overall better value thanks ot its lower price, its 2-in-1 nature, and the touchscreen and inking capabilities.

Cons

Surface Laptop 3 is a great upgrade

The Surface Laptop is one of our absolute favorites and the latest incarnation doesn't change any of that. For the first time, we have a little choice when buying, with both a 13- and a 15-inch model now. The experience of using each is mostly the same, with the biggest change coming underneath. The 15-inch version is exclusively available to consumers with a customized AMD Ryzen Surface Edition APU.

That packs four cores and eight threads on the Ryzen CPU portion, and either a Vega 9 or Vega 11 integrated GPU. Both of these have an additional GPU core over the Vega that AMD would put in other Windows laptops, giving it a little added grunt.

Even on the smaller version, performance takes a serious bump from the Surface Laptop 2, with Intel's 10th Gen processors and all-new Iris Plus graphics on the table. The Surface Laptop 3 isn't targeted at professional applications or creators, but the added horsepower certainly means you can get some good mileage in such areas.

Oh, and it has USB-C now, as well. So you don't need to buy a dongle. Hallelujah!

MacBook Pro has some superior specs

Even though there are no longer any legacy ports on the MacBook Pro, it has one fairly big advantage over the Surface Laptop 3. it has Thunderbolt 3 support on top of USB-C, and Thunderbolt 3 opens up a world of possibilities. You can attach high resolution displays to it, connect fast external storage, and perhaps most interesting of all, hook up an eGPU, putting a full desktop graphics card into your MacBook Pro.

Besides this, the MacBook Pro has six-core processors from Intel right up to a Core i9, options for dedicated graphics that go up to AMD's Radeon Vega Pro, up to 32GB of RAM and up to 4TB of storage. In all cases the AMD graphics options for the MacBook Pro are stronger than the Vega 9 or Vega 11 you're able to get on the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3.

Different laptops for different people

The Surface Laptop 3 is generally a closer match to Apple's MacBook Air in the sense that they're both highly portable yet capable Ultrabooks and they appeal to the same type of laptop buyers.

The MacBook Pro targets a different class of buyer. It's a pro-grade laptop with a ton of powerful options, much better graphics capabilities and if your wallet will go far enough, a ridiculous Core i9 processor.

The Surface Laptop 3 does come in two sizes for the first time, though, and they're both touch-enabled, something you don't get on any MacBook, with pen support for digital inking. The 15-inch model with AMD Ryzen and Vega inside is the better choice there, but the MacBook Pro can still over more outright power.

If you're already looking at the Surface Laptop 3 as something you think you'd like to buy, get it. The MacBook Pro isn't really a direct competitor, and you're going to end up spending a lot of money on the Mac to get anything really worthy.

Important

Office 365 ProPlus is being renamed to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. To learn more about this name change, read this blog post.

For details of when this change takes effect, and what actions admins might need to take, read this article.

Tip

The information in this article is intended for administrators and IT Pros. Microsoft excel backstage view mac 10. For information about activating a personal copy of Office, see Activate Office.

Shared computer activation lets you to deploy Office 365 ProPlus to a computer in your organization that is accessed by multiple users. Here are some examples of supported scenarios for using shared computer activation:

  • Three workers at a factory share the same physical computer, each worker using Office on that computer during their eight-hour shift.
  • Fifteen nurses at a hospital use Office on ten different computers throughout the day.
  • Five employees connect remotely to the same computer to run Office.
  • Multiple employees use Office on a computer that's located in a conference room or some other public space in the company.

The most common shared computer activation scenario is to deploy Office 365 ProPlus to shared computers by using Remote Desktop Services (RDS). By using RDS, multiple users can connect to the same remote computer at the same time. The users can each run Office 365 ProPlus programs, such as Word or Excel, at the same time on the remote computer.

Shared computer activation is used for situations where multiple users share the same computer and the users are logging in with their own account. If you have users who are assigned individual computers and no other users work on those computers, you use product key activation for Office 365 ProPlus.

Normally, users can install and activate Office 365 ProPlus only on a limited number of devices, such as 5 PCs. Using Office 365 ProPlus with shared computer activation enabled doesn't count against that limit.

How to enable shared computer activation for Office 365 ProPlus

If you have an Office 365 plan that includes Office 365 ProPlus, you can use shared computer activation. Make sure you assign each user a license for Office 365 ProPlus and that users log on to the shared computer with their own user account.

Note

Shared computer activation is also available for the following:

  • Subscription versions of Project and Visio. For example, if you have the Project Online Professional plan or Visio Online Plan 2.
  • Microsoft 365 Business subscribers, whose version of Office is Office 365 Business. But, Microsoft 365 Business subscribers won't be able to use Group Policy to enable shared computer activation, because Office 365 Business doesn't support the use of Group Policy.

Shared computer activation isn't available for Office for Mac.

To enable shared computer activation when you deploy Office 365 ProPlus, you need the current version of the Office Deployment Tool, which is available for free from the Microsoft Download Center.

The Office Deployment Tool, combined with a simple text file, is used to install Office 365 ProPlus on the shared computer, and to enable shared computer activation for that computer. Add the following lines when you create the text file.

After Office 365 ProPlus is installed, you can verify that shared computer activation is enabled on that computer.

Note

Here are some other ways that you can enable shared computer activation:

  • Download and run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant.
  • Use Group Policy by downloading the most current Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) for Office and enabling the 'Use shared computer activation' policy setting. This policy setting is found under Computer ConfigurationPoliciesAdministrative TemplatesMicrosoft Office 2016 (Machine)Licensing Settings.
  • Use Registry Editor to add a string value of SharedComputerLicensing with a setting of 1 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOfficeClickToRunConfiguration.

How shared computer activation works for Office 365 ProPlus

Here's what happens after Office 365 ProPlus is installed on a computer that has shared computer activation enabled.

Microsoft
  1. A user logs on to the computer with her account.

  2. The user starts an Office 365 ProPlus program, such as Word.

  3. Office 365 ProPlus contacts the Office Licensing Service on the Internet to obtain a licensing token for the user.

To determine whether the user is licensed to use Office 365 ProPlus, the Office Licensing Service has to know the user's account for Office 365. In some cases, Office 365 ProPlus prompts the user to provide the information. For example, the user might see the Activate Office dialog box.

If your environment is configured to synchronize Office 365 and network user accounts, then the user probably won't see any prompts. Office 365 ProPlus should automatically be able to get the necessary information about the user's account in Office 365.

  4. If the user is licensed for Office 365 ProPlus, a licensing token is stored on the computer in the user's profile folder, and Office 365 ProPlus is activated. The user can now use Office 365 ProPlus.

These steps are repeated for each user who logs on to the shared computer. Each user gets a unique licensing token. Just because one user activates Office 365 ProPlus on the computer doesn't mean Office 365 ProPlus is activated for all other users who log on to the computer.

Microsoft Office Mac 2 Computers 2017

If a user goes to another computer that also is enabled for shared computer activation, the same steps occur. There is a different licensing token for each computer that the user logs on to.

If a user logs on to a shared computer again, Office 365 ProPlus uses the same licensing token, if it is still valid.

Additional details about shared computer activation for Office 365 ProPlus

Licensing token renewal The licensing token that is stored on the shared computer is valid only for 30 days. As the expiration date for the licensing token nears, Office 365 ProPlus automatically attempts to renew the licensing token when the user is logged on to the computer and using Office 365 ProPlus.

If the user doesn't log on to the shared computer for 30 days, the licensing token can expire. The next time that the user tries to use Office 365 ProPlus, Office 365 ProPlus contacts the Office Licensing Service on the Internet to get a new licensing token.

Internet connectivity Because the shared computer has to contact the Office Licensing Service on the Internet to obtain or renew a licensing token, reliable connectivity between the shared computer and the Internet is necessary.

Reduced functionality mode If the user is not licensed for Office 365 ProPlus, or if the user closed the Activate Office dialog box, no licensing token is obtained and Office 365 ProPlus isn't activated. Office 365 ProPlus is now in reduced functionality mode. This means that the user can view and print Office 365 ProPlus documents, but can't create or edit documents. The user also sees a message in Office 365 ProPlus that most features are turned off.

Activation limits Normally, users can install and activate Office 365 ProPlus only on a limited number of devices, such as 5 PCs. Using Office 365 ProPlus with shared computer activation enabled doesn't count against that limit.

Microsoft allows a single user to activate Office 365 ProPlus on a reasonable number of shared computers in a given time period. The user gets an error message in the unlikely event the limit is exceeded.

Single sign-on recommended The use of single sign-on (SSO) is recommended to reduce how often users are prompted to sign in for activation. With single sign-on configured, Office is activated using the user credentials that the user provides to sign in to Windows, as long as the user has been assigned a license for Office 365 ProPlus. For more information, see Understanding Office 365 identity and Azure Active Directory.

If you don't use single sign-on, you should consider using roaming profiles and include the %localappdata%MicrosoftOffice16.0Licensing folder as part of the roaming profile.

Licensing token roaming Starting with Version 1704 of Office 365 ProPlus, you can configure the licensing token to roam with the user's profile or be located on a shared folder on the network. Previously, the licensing token was always saved to a specific folder on the local computer and was associated with that specific computer. In those cases, if the user signed in to a different computer, the user would be prompted to activate Office on that computer in order to get a new licensing token. The ability to roam the licensing token is especially helpful for non-persistent VDI scenarios.

To configure licensing token roaming, you can use either the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy, or you can use Registry Editor to edit the registry. Whichever method you choose, you need to provide a folder location that is unique to the user. The folder location can either be part of the user's roaming profile or a shared folder on the network. Office needs to be able to write to that folder location. If you're using a shared folder on the network, be aware that network latency problems can adversely impact the time it takes to open Office.

  • If you're using Group Policy, download the most current Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) for Office and enable the 'Specify the location to save the licensing token used by shared computer activation' policy setting. This policy setting is found under Computer ConfigurationPoliciesAdministrative TemplatesMicrosoft Office 2016 (Machine)Licensing Settings.

  • If you're using the Office Deployment Tool, include the SCLCacheOverride and SCLCacheOverrideDirectory in the Property element of your configuration.xml file. For more information, see Configuration options for the Office Deployment Tool.

  • To edit the registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOfficeClickToRunConfiguration, add a string value of SCLCacheOverride, and set the value to 1. Also, add a string value of SCLCacheOverrideDirectory and set the value to the path of the folder to save the licensing token.

    Note

If you're using Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) to deploy Office 365 ProPlus, the registry location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice16.0CommonLicensing.

Applicability

Office has equations that you can readily insert into your documents. If the Office built-in equations don’t meet your needs, you can edit, change the existing equation, or write your own equation from scratch. What's new for equations in Word. Insider students and educators: We heard you loud and clear! Microsoft Equation Editor 3.0 (MEE) was a third-party component that was included in many versions of Office to help users add math equations to documents. MEE was pulled from the product, retroactively back to Office 2007, due to security concerns.

The information on this page applies to:
  • MathType for Windows and Mac
  • Equation Editor (e.g., Microsoft Equation 3) for Windows and Mac
All supported versions of Word for Windows and Mac

Issue

Many users become concerned when their equations are replaced with empty boxes or appear in gray-shaded boxes. Double-clicking these boxes will launch MathType and display the equation, and the equations will print correctly, but the equations are not displayed properly in Microsoft Word.

Reason

The 'empty boxes' behavior is a feature in Microsoft Word called 'Picture (or Image) Placeholders' designed to conserve RAM. The Picture Placeholders option helps minimize the amount of computer resources required to display a page and helps Word scroll multiple pages faster on-screen. So long as your computer does not have insufficient RAM, you can toggle this setting so the equations in your document display on-screen.

The 'gray-shading' behavior is a setting called 'Field Shading' designed to make finding equations and other OLE objects easier when they can be difficult to see among surrounding content.

Solution

As these are features of Word, it is advisable to refer to Word's Help files to learn more about them and how they are activated.

If none of the equations or other graphics in your document display (Windows only)

If you find that all of the graphics in your document are not being displayed, Picture (or Image) Placeholders is probably enabled. To turn this option off, do the following:

  1. Select
    • Office button | Word Options | Advanced |Show document content (Word 2007)
    • File tab | Options | Advanced | Show document content (Word 2010 and later)
  2. Uncheck the box for Image Placeholders or Picture Placeholders.

If this was the cause, unchecking this option will cause all the objects in the document to be displayed again.

If some or all of the equations or other graphics in your document display in a gray-shaded box

If you find that some or all of the graphics in your document display in gray (or striped) boxes, Field Shading is probably enabled. To turn this option off, do the following:

  1. Select
    • File tab | Options | Advanced | Show document content (Word 2010 and later)
  2. Under Field Shading, select Never from the pull-down menu.

Microsoft Word Mac Update

If this was the cause, setting this option to Never will cause all the objects in the document to be displayed properly again.
